THE STORY:
Fanshawe and Hughes are two young gentlemen living in what appears to be the 18th century, but isn’t quite, in a country that appears to be England, but isn’t quite. They have run through their modest fortunes and have decided they need to marry into money.
But to get a rich wife, you need to appear rich yourself!
So they go to a town where they’re not known, where Fanshawe pretends to be a rich viscount and Hughes pretends to be his footman (because everyone knows you can only afford a footman if you are really rich), roles that will be reversed in the next town.
Meanwhile, Julia the prettiest young woman around, is very susceptible to the arrival in town of a handsome stranger. Her sister-in-law, Lucinda, is in an unhappy marriage and finds the stranger’s rather attractive footman to be a welcome distraction.
But there are complications, what with a gang of highwaymen based at the inn Fanshawe and Hughes are staying in, the innkeeper’s daughter falling in love with Hughes, an acquaintance arriving who could give away their ploy, and love getting in the way of fortune.
