The Early Years:
Before writing musical comedies, P.R. Pinnock wrote songs in a sort of folk vein, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. Thankfully there are no recordings from this period.
The Recalcitrants:
The first band Mr Pinnock formed was a rock band called the Recalcitrants in which he played electric guitar. The band started out playing covers of rock standards but was soon playing original songs, the majority of which were written by Mr Pinnock. The band was described at the time as “pretentious, pseudo-intellectual art rock.” (This is from the band’s promotional material, which was written by Mr Pinnock.) There are extant recordings of the band which may someday be posted.
Combo6:
Combo6 was a six-piece swing band in which Mr Pinnock played baritone saxophone. It started out playing standards and pop songs, mostly arranged by Mr Pinnock. Eventually he wrote original songs for the band as well. Three song can be heard on YouTube: “Primordial Ooze,” “King of the Jungle,” and “Not a Word He Said.”
Tea On a Rollercoaster:
This band did not actually exist, but was a short-lived recording project. It did give Mr Pinnock an excuse to try his hand at computer animation on the song “The Contraband Cat.” One may judge the results for oneself: it, along with “I Dreamed I Was Asleep,” can be found on YouTube.
